John Lewis reports biggest ever sales week

John Lewis saw its department store sales rise by 7.7% year-on-year last week in what was its biggest ever sales week.

Customers took advantage of the retailer’s Black Friday offers and also benefited from its price matching of competitor offers through its Never Knowingly Undersold policy.

John Lewis said both its website and shops traded well with a number of stores achieving a record week. While Black Friday was the busiest day of the week, sales were also up across other days due to offers launching earlier in the week.

Electrical and home technology sales climbed by 5.7% as trade was driven by strong sales in the audio, mobile phone and tablet categories. Some of the best selling items included Apple Airpods, the Amazon Echo Dot Smart Device and Google Home Mini Smart Speakers.

Meanwhile, fashion sales increased by 13.1% as Black Friday promotions on branded items encouraged shoppers to spend. Popular items included Creed Aventus Eau de Parfum, the John Lewis & Partners Beauty Advent Calendar and a Clarins Skincare Gift Set.

Home sales were up 2.3% in the week following strong trading in the beds category. The cookshop, bedding, bath and lighting categories all performed well due to the retailer price matching competitor promotions. John Lewis’s seven foot Brunswick Spruce Christmas tree was also a popular purchase.
