John Lewis weekly sales up 8%
John Lewis says that last weekÂ’s sales were up by 8% on the same week last year as it benefited from an extra day of trade against Easter Sunday last year.
The London stores performed strongly, with Peter Jones achieving an increase of 21.1% and Oxford Street 13.5%. The retailer said that elsewhere, many branches suffered lower footfall, “driven by later school holidays and the sunshine.” Poole was the worst performing store with sales down 11.3%.
Fashion sales were up by 10.3% for the week which was a decline on growth seen in the previous week but demand was still strong with womenswear benefitting from the start of the wedding season.
Sales of furniture and homewares were boosted by strong availability and the best increases came from beds and bed linen ranges. Barbecues, garden furniture and picnicware all sold well with the arrival of the warm weather. Sales of summer ranges were also up with linen, sunglasses and swimwear up 40% on last year.
