J Crew opens first UK store

J Crew has made its long-awaited debut in the UK with the opening of a menswear boutique in London’s Bloomsbury.

The new store in Lambs Conduit Street will be followed by the opening a flagship shop in Regent Street and a womenswear boutique in Brompton Cross, west London. Both stores will launch later this year.

The retailer said it wanted the move into the UK to be deliberately discreet which is borne out by the choice of location for the first store. Lambs Conduit Street is home to a number of chic clothing and homewares stores, most of which are independently owned.

"We just loved the street, it's like a stage set," J Crew chairman Mickey Drexler told The Guardian. "We are trying not to do the big US company coming to London. We want to be low-key.

“We are seeing how it goes. There is a lot of demand there from what we feel and see in online business."
