Gelert rescued by Sports Direct
Camping and outdoor specialist Gelert has been saved from collapse after being bought by Sports Direct.
The majority of the Widnes-based business and assets have been acquired by the sporting goods retailer which already has a portfolio of sport, fashion and lifestyle brands including Dunlop, Slazenger, Everlast, Lonsdale and Karrimor.
Gelert was established in 1975 and operates as an importer, wholesaler and retailer of outdoor and camping equipment. It has retail outlets in Porthmadog, Bedgellert, Caernarfon, Betws-y-coed and Dublin, in addition to a showroom in Haydock and wholesale activities operating from its Widnes headquarters.
David Riley and Les Ross of Grant Thornton were appointed as administrative receivers of Gelert Ltd on 21 June in order to complete the sale.
The value of the deal for has not been disclosed but it will secure around 100 jobs in Wales and the North West. Grant Thornton is currently reviewing options for the Dublin retail operation, which is not included in the sale.
Commenting on the acquisition, Riley said: “Gelert is a well-established brand and we are delighted to have been able to secure a sale to set it on a new course for the future under new ownership.”
