Gap to launch transactional website in UK

Yet another major global retail brand is to open an online shop for UK consumers with US-based Gap to launch a transactional website in the UK during 2010.

This decision follows the success of its online store in the US that has helped it grow its Direct business from $595 million of sales in 2005 to more than $1 billion in 2008. Customers have been tempted by the addition of contemporary apparel to its online shoe and handbag shop and to its decision to more deeply engage with its existing customers and allow potential customers to better understand its clothing options and fits through incorporating customer reviews on all its e-commerce sites in the US.

The company has stated that a top priority for the Direct division in 2010 is to focus on international expansion and this includes the launch of online shopping for customers in the UK as well as Canada.

Glenn Murphy, chairman and CEO of Gap Inc, says: “With our improved economic model, we’re ready to step up our investments and strategies to regain market share and expand our international platform.”
