Games Workshop in ‘great shape’ after sales and profit rise

Games Workshop, the fantasy gaming retailer, has said it is in “great shape” after reporting an increase in both its half year sales and profits.

In the six months to 2 December revenue climbed to £125.2 million from £109.6 million a year earlier. Meanwhile operating profit and pre-tax profit rose from a previous £38.1 million to £40.8 million in the period.

Kevin Rountree, chief executive of Games Workshop, said: “Our business and the Warhammer Hobby continue to be in great shape. We have remained true to our long-term strategy, and once again delivered on our promise to produce and sell the best fantasy miniatures in the world, while engaging and inspiring our fans. Exciting times.”

Games Workshop’s retail channel achieved growth in all of its territories with exception of Australia and New Zealand. With 507 stores operating at the end of the period, the company said one of its main priorities was to offer its store managers the right product and sales support to help them recruit new customers.

During the priod Games Workshop benefited from strong online marketing activity. The company said: “Our online marketing remains one of our great strengths. The main Warhammer Community website continues to increase its readership, with visitor numbers up an impressive 30% compared to the same period last year – now almost a million visits to the site each week.”

Looking at more recent trading, Games Workshop said trading in December was in line with with sales in its first half.
