Fashion boosts sales at John Lewis last week
John Lewis increased its sales by 3.5% year-on-year last week with total sales of £165.6 million.
Online sales at johnlewis.com were 13.6% up on last year. Cyber Monday was a big day for parcel deliveries with 22.4% more units fulfilled year-on-year.
Maggie Porteous, director of selling, north and new formats at John Lewis, said: "At the beginning of the week sales were driven by the final days of price matching our competitors' Black Friday activity through our Never Knowingly Undersold commitment. Shops were busy as customers took advantage of our 'my John Lewis' events."
Looking at the directorates, fashion led the way with sales rising by 5.7% year-on-year. Some of the best performing categories included women's handbags, accessories and menswear. Despite the mild temperatures, sales of cold weather items were buoyant.
Electricals and home technology sales continued to benefit from Black Friday price matching extending into Sunday with sales up 2.8% year-on-year. It was another strong week for wearable tech and the retailer’s best-ever week for sales of Apple watches.
Meanwhile, home sales rose by 1.9% with Christmas decorations, Christmas trees and textiles all achieving good percentage increases.
Porteus added: "Our 'my John Lewis' events have been well received as customers ensure they have everything they need for the festive period. We expect this trend to continue as we count down to Christmas."
