EU emission plans for vans and light trucks
Michael Woods, partner and Head of Climate Change and Carbon Finance at international law firm Eversheds, comments on proposals by the European Commission to introduce tighter environmental standards for light commercial vehicles and trucks over the next four years"Reducing emissions from road transport is a key target for regulatory action in the European Union g iven its high overall contribution compared with other modes such as rail, aviation and shipping. Increased standards have already been imposed on passenger car manufacturers but vans and light trucks have been seen as a gap by the EU Commission. The proposed standards will impose greater cost on the industry and could lead to compliance issues, especially if the requirements are implemented too quickly to be readily accommodated from a technical perspective. The Commission has however shown itself willing to push through measures to address climate change and the transport sector even in difficult economic times."
