Dixons and Carphone Warehouse in talks regarding merger

Dixons and Carphone Warehouse have announced that they are in talks about a possible merger.

In statement the retailers said recent speculation had led them to make the announcement and that the discussions were at a preliminary stage with no certainty that a merger would take place.

They also confirmed that no decision had been reached regarding the structuring of any potential merger.

Carphone Warehouse has more than 2,000 stores across Europe while Dixons, which owns Currys and PC World, has over 500 shops in the UK and Ireland as well as a sizeable store presence in Europe.

In addition, Carphone Warehouse has recently announced plans to open 60 Samsung branded stores across seven European markets including the UK.

Dixons posted a 5% increase in UK and Ireland like-for-like sales over the Christmas trading period while Carphone Warehouse saw group like-for-like revenue rise by 3.1% in its third quarter ending 28 December 2013.

The two companies now have until 24 March to confirm any tie-up.
