Debenhams offers "deepest ever" pre-Christmas discounts
The retailer has announced that it will be offering customers £200 million worth of savings for five days from today with up to 40% discounts throughout its stores and online.
The move heralds the start of what some experts are predicting will be one of most frenzied Christmases in retail in the last 10 years, said Debenhams.
Discounts will available in all of its 164 departments and the retailer will open its stores for longer during the five days, up to 11pm on some days.
“This is fabulous news for our customers,” said Michael Sharp, chief executive of Debenhams.
He added: "The challenges families are facing up and down the country – coping with higher energy bills and a hike in food prices - means shoppers are constantly looking for ways to make their money go further. It’s our job to plan for this and help them out."
Last week the British Retail Consortium said a fall in retail sales in October did not bode well for the Christmas trading period and sales at the UK’s largest department store group John Lewis fell 0.8% year-on-year last week despite strong sales of gifts and Christmas trees.
