Costa Coffee reports strong sales growth
Costa Coffee saw its total system sales rise by 22.4% to £962 million last year as the Whitbread owned chain continues to expand its store network.
In the 50 weeks to 14 February, the coffee chain increased its like-for-like sales by 6.6% while UK retail system sales rose 20.2% to £525.2 million.
In Whitbread’s fourth quarter, which covers the 11 weeks to 14 February, Costa grew its total sales by 32.2% while like-for-like sales rose by 5.5%.
Whitbread said it was on track to open 320 new stores worldwide and around 1,300 Costa Express units in the full year. Next year, the company plans to open a similar number of coffee outlets and over 500 Costa Express units worldwide.
Costa now operates a 1,241 Costa stores in the UK and 2,516 international shops in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Franchise sales increased 18.5% rise to £383.3 million in the 50-week period.
Across the Whitbread Group total sales increased by 16.9% in the fourth quarter, while like-for-like sales rose by 2.7%. Whitbread said the like-for-like growth was “slightly suppressed” due to adverse weather conditions in January.
