Costa Coffee saw like-for-like sales increase by 9.7% in the 11 weeks to 18 August as the coffee chain marked its 38th consecutive quarter of growth.

First half total sales grew by 28.8% to £351.3 million.

Andy Harris CEO of parent company Whitbread said: “Costa grew its total sales by 28.8% and continues to demonstrate that it is the UK's favourite coffee shop."

Whitbread said that Costa had opened 145 new stores in its first half and planned to open a  further 300 units. The company now has 1295 stores wordwide and has just opened its 100th outlet in China.

The company said the launch of Costa Express, the self-service coffee machines concept, was "progressing well" following its acquisition of Coffee Nation for £59.5 million in March. The company has now converted 155 units to Costa Express and is rebranding the remaining 760.
