Christmas cheer for Booths

Food and drink retailer Booths increased its Christmas sales by 3.3% in the three weeks to 5 January.

In addition, the family owned firm’s profits rose by 4.5% year-on-year.

Booths chairman and chief executive Edwin Booth said: “Booths performed very well in a highly competitive market over Christmas. We focused on offering the very best traditional Christmas food and drink with flair and purpose. I’m delighted with our Christmas performance and the positive momentum that we are achieving throughout the business.”

Products achieving some of the best uplifts on the previous year included turkey and trimmings, smoked salmon and gammon. Booths’ wines also performed particularly well with sales of Malbec wines up 50%.

During the period Booths sold 65,000 bottles of gin and half a million bottles of ale and lager. Sales of low alcohol wine increased by 35%.

Sales via the retailer’s click and collect service climbed by 15% in the period.

Booth added: “I’m very proud of the dedication shown by our colleagues and suppliers this Christmas. Great credit goes to the teams who worked tirelessly throughout the year to deliver the very best service, range and value for our Booths customers, both in our Northern heartland and beyond.”
