AS Watson reports buoyant Christmas trading across its three UK brands
Christmas sales for Superdrug were up 7.4% on a like-for-like basis in December and rose 6.8% in the eight weeks to 27 December. While Black Friday was a key trading day, Christmas Eve was the highest trading day of the year with sales up 15.7% compared to the same day in 2013.
The group said it sold over 100,000 bottles of fragrance at Superdrug on Christmas Eve. Other categories to perform well included cough and cold remedies with sales rising by 29.1% in December.
Looking The Perfume Shop, sales increased by 2% in the six weeks to 27 December boosted by strong sales of Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream and Boss Bottled Night. The Perfume Shop’s online sales continued to perform well, rising by 27.1% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, Savers increased its sales by 11% over 2014.
AS Watson saw record sales growth of 50.1% year-on-year in the six week period across its Europe e-commerce sites with the number of transactions increasing by 85.7%. The group achieved its best performance on Black Friday with 878,000 visits to its e-commerce websites and more than 18,000 orders made in a single day.
Commenting on the trading performance in the UK, AS Watson chief operating officer Malina Ngai said: “The strong performance of our UK retailers this Christmas shows that fragrance and health & beauty gifts are still on our customers’ festive shopping lists.
“The success of the latest luxury fragrances and the Youtube celebrity collections show that offering shoppers the very latest products and exclusive collections is key to success.”
