American Apparel reports 19th consecutive month of sales growth

US fashion brand American Apparel has reported its 19th consecutive month of comparable sales growth with a 14% increase in sales in December.

This includes a 9% increase in comparable sales for its retail store channel and a 59% rise in online sales*.

Wholesale net sales increased 12% in the month and total net sales increased 14% to $63.5 million. For the year ended 31 December 2012, total net sales increased 13% to $616.7 million, with a 15% increase in comparable store sales, and a 12% increase in wholesale net sales.

American Apparel chairman and chief executive Dov Charney said: “December represents our 19th consecutive month of positive comparable sales.

“Good performance was achieved in all our businesses: retail, wholesale, and online. We experienced sales growth in almost all major markets and product categories.

“We believe we can continue making store productivity gains and see comparable same store sales increase in all channels through 2013. Additionally, we expect to see corresponding improvements in gross margin through leverage of fixed overhead at the factory and store level.”

American Apparel operates 251 retail stores in 20 countries worldwide including the UK. The retailer also has a global e-commerce site serving 60 countries.
