Amazon to hire 10,000 Christmas workers
Online retail giant has announced that it will create 10,000 temporary jobs at its UK fulfilment centres over Christmas to help it despatch the millions of extra orders it expects during the busy festive period.
The online retailer said recruitment was already underway for the positions which will be based at Amazon's eight warehouses across the UK.
Catherine McDermott, director of operations at Amazon.co.uk said: "On our busiest shopping day last Christmas, we saw customers order a total of three million items during one 24-hour period at a rate of 35 items every second."
The company’s peak period for sales starts this month and runs until the end of December.
Amazon said that over the last three years, thousands of employees had moved into permanent roles from initial temporary contracts. McDermott added: "We are a company in growth and when we have permanent positions to fill, it’s the top performing temporary employees that we look to."
