Aldi raises pay rates for store staff

Aldi has announced an increase in its minimum hourly rates of pay for store staff.

The retailer said store assistants will earn minimum hourly rates of £9.10 nationally and £10.55 if they are working inside the M25.

The new rate will come into effect on 1 February and will rise to £10.41 after three years nationally and £10.89 in London. Aldi staff's previous rates were £8.85 nationally and £10.20 within the M25.

The new rate exceeds the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended ‘real living wage’ rate of £9 per hour nationally and is the same as the £10.55 per hour rate that the organisation recommends for workers inside the M25.

Aldi has also announced that its store assistants will receive an improved employer pension contribution.

Giles Hurley, Aldi chief executive the UK, said: “Our store colleagues do a fantastic job every day and the excellent service they provide to customers is a key reason why we are the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket.

“We’re committed to being the best supermarket employer in Britain and this means rewarding our colleagues for the excellent job they do with market-leading rates of pay and opportunities to progress their career at Aldi.”

Aldi’s total sales in the UK and Ireland broke the £12 billion barrier for the first time in 2018. With more than 800 stores across the UK, the retailer is planning to open 65 more stores this year as part of plans to have 1,200 UK shops by the end of 2025.
