A week of two halves for John Lewis
Damp weather on Sunday boosted sales at the start of the trading week but trade became quieter as the weather improved towards the end of the week.
In the shops, Swindon, Ipswich and Newbury put in the best performances for the 'At Home' format while Southampton and Watford achieved some of the biggest percentage increases for the full-line shops. Online sales climbed by 13.3%.
In the home directorate, sales increased by 11.2% with furnishing fabrics, bedding and fitted furniture putting in some of the best performances.
Fashion sales grew by 2.6% boosted by a 12.5% rise in sales of menswear.
Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales edged down 0.5% year-on-year despite a strong week for vision sales which grew by 13.1%.
Simon Russell, director of retail development operations at John Lewis, said: “Peak holiday season is now upon us and our focus remains on introducing a few surprises for customers with some inspiring new products and propositions, in particular some fantastic new season's lines which are starting to appear on the website and in our shops.”
