Tesco is urging celebrities with a birthday during the Christmas period to and recycle their birthday and Christmas cards this year.

Tesco is writing to celebrities including singers Dido, Annie Lennox and model Helena Christiansen, all born on Christmas day, urging them to take their birthday and Christmas cards to their nearest Tesco store for recycling.
Recycling bins will be in all 730 Tesco stores across the country between January 6 and February 2. The scheme is managed by the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.
Last year, the scheme recycled 34 million cards, the equivalent of 671 tonnes. Recycling birthday cards at the same time as Christmas cards could double the amount of cards recycled by the Woodland Trust.
Tesco corporate affairs director, Lucy Neville-Rolfe, said: “Having a birthday during the Christmas period is often seen as unlucky as it invariably means getting fewer presents – but it could be good for the environment.
“For some celebrities, their fan base is huge, and they and their fan clubs receive thousands of Christmas and birthday cards each year. They can lead by example and do their bit for the environment. Remember, Every Little Helps!
“Last year the Christmas Card Recycling Scheme recycled a massive 34m cards. If those with birthdays during the scheme recycled their birthday cards as well it is possible for last year’s total to be doubled – saving another 11,500 trees.”
Tesco will be writing to other celebrities with a birthday during the recycling scheme including: Jude Law, ex-Spice Girls Emma Bunton and Mel C, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Kate Moss, Vanessa Redgrave.
