‘London Calling’ For Discounter chain Poundland
Poundland today (19 May 2023) confirmed it was continuing to seek out locations in the M25 for its new store format.
The move follows successful openings of its ‘Local’ stores over the last six months in East Dulwich, Clapham, Swiss Cottage and Whitechapel.
The news coincides with an extension to Poundland’s Bow store at 580-586 Roman Road that sees a full internal renovation and converts a large warehouse area (2500 sq ft) to selling space and increases the total shop floor size by a third. The improvements also create four new jobs and opens on Saturday 20 May 2023.
Poundland’s flexible format strategy of the right store in the right place, shunning a ‘one size fits all’ approach, means that Poundland is continuing to seek out a range of store sizes but with a particular focus in the M25 on its essential format stores.
Its recent new format store openings in London are designed to offer value to local residents and commuters who work in the area helping them to save money on a carefully curated range of products, whether they are buying lunch, doing a planned top-up shop or making an urgent last-minute buy.
All carry Poundland’s core range including groceries, snacks, household products, health and beauty and batteries. Customers will also find items they would expect in a convenience store including fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen food, bread and morning goods, hot pies and pastries, nappies and formula milk, beers, wines and spirits.
Poundland director of property, Ben Wall said: “When it comes to requests for a new store London is always one of the most popular areas that customers would like one. We know that from recent store openings that Londoners love amazing Poundland value just like the rest of the country.
“And while the newer store openings have followed our essential format, we are open to looking at store opportunities of different sizes on high streets, shopping centres and retail parks.
The extension to Poundland’s Bow store will deliver even more amazing value than before. Customers can expect bigger categories such as food and drink, home and pet, entertainment and stationery.
The store will be bright and airy with a modern and contemporary feel designed to give customers maximum convenience with a larger Pep clothing and home offering of womenswear, menswear and kidswear from the UK’s fastest growing clothing brand.
Bow will join the growing number of stores to offer chilled and frozen food and it will be one of around 300 stores across the country getting fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as a selection of beers, wines and spirits.
Poundland director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “We love being in Bow, in fact we’ve been here for over ten years and we know how much locals love their Poundland. That’s why we wanted to open an even bigger and better store.”
“With the extension we have squeezed in even more amazing value under one roof across more categories than ever before.”
“We really can’t wait to open the doors at Bow on 20 May and show off a new and improved shopping experience and wider ranges.”
