Lidl plans to open largest UK distribution centre in Peterborough

Lidl has exchanged contracts on a 34-acre site in Peterborough where it plans to build a new 754,000 square foot distribution centre.

The facility will be the supermarket’s biggest in the UK and will create up to 500 jobs for the area.

Lidl is investing £1.45 billion in the UK between 2017 and 2018 as it looks to expand its business. The warehouse, which is the supermarket’s sixth new distribution centre to be announced in a year, will manage the supply and distribution of food and non-food items to stores in the surrounding area, using the latest energy efficient and zero-carbon technologies.

Adrienne Howells, Lidl head of warehouse expansion, said, “We are very excited about our proposed regional distribution centre in Peterborough. Our expansion across the UK is progressing rapidly, and it’s important we have the right supply chain infrastructure to support this. Peterborough is ideally located and we’re pleased to be bringing more jobs to the local community.”

Lidl UK will now seek to obtain planning consent for the site.

Earlier this year, the supermarket opened its 11th new warehouse in Wednesbury and more recently announced the start of construction at its Doncaster distribution centre. In addition, its Scottish facility is relocating to larger premises in the Eurocentral industrial estate. A further warehouse in Bolton is also in the pipeline, along with the relocation of Lidl’s Weston-Super-Mare distribution centre to Avonmouth.

Since opening the doors to its first UK supermarket in 1994, Lidl has grown its store estate to 670 outlets nationwide.
