John Lewis sales edge up 0.8% last week

The John Lewis department store chain increased its sales by 0.8% year-on-year last week as the warm weather continued to impact sales.

Fashion sales were down 0.9% overall although childrenswear sales increased as back-to-school purchases boosted trade.

Electricals and home technology sales climbed by 5.5% with mobile phone sales a key driver. The Dyson Supersonic hairdryer was also a popular purchase.

Meanwhile, sales in the home category declined by 1.9%, although furniture continued its strong run-rate at with sales growing by 4.3%. The retailer’s own-brand range House performed well on the back of a promotion and its new Design Project range also enjoyed a strong week.
