Banana Republic hires Marissa Webb as creative director

US fashion chain Banana Republic has named Marissa Webb as its new creative director and executive vice president of design.

Due to join the retailer at the end of this month, Webb will be responsible for guiding Banana Republic’s overall creative direction and for leading global product design for the clothing and accessory ranges. Webb’s first collection for the brand is expected in the summer of 2015.

Webb will report directly to Banana Republic’s global president Jack Calhoun in her new role. Commenting on the appointment Calhoun said: “I am so excited for Marissa to bring her own special touch to the brand. What she delivers today is so fresh and relevant, I know her design sensibility will move Banana Republic forward in our effort to deliver modern American style. I can’t wait to have her on board.”

Prior to launching her own fashion label in 2011, Webb worked with Polo and Club Monaco and also spent ten years at J Crew Group where roles included head of womenswear and accessories design.

She will retain her role as president and creative director at Marissa Webb after joining Banana Republic, and the brand’s owner Gap Inc has announced that it will invest in the label. Initially launched exclusively at Barneys New York, the Marissa Webb Collection is now sold online and in over 30 stores globally, including select locations within Gap’s Intermix division. Calhoun will work with Webb as a strategic partner in the growth and development of the business.

Webb said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the extremely passionate, talented design and creative teams at Banana Republic. The brand has such a beautiful history which I truly admire. This is an amazing opportunity for me to combine my unique vision with a brand that has such a strong legacy. I’m excited to be joining Banana Republic and being able to make an impact for our modern customer.”
