Lidl Christmas sales up 17.9%

Lidl GB has reported record Christmas trading with sales increasing by 17.9% in the four weeks to 27 December compared to the same period in 2019.

The supermarket also saw its basket size rise by 24.8% year-on-year.

Items popular with customers included panettone, mulled wine and Lidl’s Deluxe Luxury Mince Pies. The retailer’s wider Deluxe range was particularly popular with sales up 22% in the period.

Christian Härtnagel, Lidl GB chief executive, said: “Despite this Christmas being a difficult time for many across the country, we are pleased to have been able to help our customers enjoy themselves by offering high quality food at the lowest prices on the market. Our record sales and significant basket size growth just demonstrates the strength of the Lidl appeal.”

Lidl continued to expand its store estate in the period and opened four new stores in December. The supermarket is  currently working towards a target of 1,000 stores by 2023.
