Co-op launches next-gen ‘on-the-go’ micro store format
Co-op is launching a chain of new concept “food-for-now” stores in a range of high footfall locations.
The retailer described the new ‘on-the-go’ format as a UK first for a national grocer, adding that it was unlike any other in store in its estate.
The shops will be around one-quarter of the size of a typical Co-op convenience shop and will offer key meal solutions throughout the day, including for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The range will include everything from classic meal deals to items from Co-op’s first-ever hot food counter, along with a new all-day deli selection.
Co-op said: “Shoppers can simply pop in for a Costa Coffee, hot baguette, buttermilk chicken tenders or wholesome protein pots for a quick hot lunch on the go.d for the growing ‘grab-and-go’ consumer culture.”
Subscribe to TRBThe first ‘on-the-go’ store has opened today in Solihull as the retailer looks ahead to 15 openings over the coming months. Co=op is aiming to launch several hundred in the next two to three years.

In another first for Co-op, the new concept stores will operate with unique trading hours, opening daily from 7am to 7pm. The next phase will see the stores turn to a ‘dark trading’ model in the evening where customers will be able to order cooked Co-op Irresistible Pizzas for delivery to their doorstep in minutes.
