Asda to bring back £1 ‘winter warmer’ café initiative

Asda is bringing back its ‘winter warmer’ £1 meal deal for people over 60 this winter.

Running from 1 November to the end of February, the deal will offer older people the chance to have soup, bread and unlimited tea or coffee for £1 in any of the supermarket’s 212 cafes.

In addition, Asda’s Community Champions are inviting and encouraging local over-60s groups and individuals to visit the cafés to enjoy the meal and chat to others.

The initiative follows Asda’s Christmas Community Tracker last year, which revealed that one in ten people are unsure whether they will speak to anyone between 15 December and 1 January, and that one in ten over-60s have visited a supermarket simply to have a conversation with someone.

Jordan Cummings – buying manager, cafes and concessions at Asda, said: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.

“Last year alone we sold over half a million meals showing the vital need for this initiative. By bringing Winter Warmers back this November, we hope it will continue to be just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most, as well as offering a relaxed social environment to come and chat to others.”
