Aldi delivers record Christmas sales

Aldi UK has said it achieved its best-ever Christmas after sales in the four weeks to 24 December broke the £1 billion barrier for the first time.

Sales increased by 7.9% compared to the same trading period in the previous year. The supermarket said its performance was boosted by a surge in demand for beers, wine, spirits, premium products and fresh British meat.

Sales in the beers, wine and spirits category increased by 9.2% while sales of sparkling wine rose by more than 14%.

Meanwhile, sales of premium Specially Selected branded products and fresh UK meat both climbed by 8%. The retailer said its Sspecially Selected Exquisite Bronze Turkey and Specially Selected British Beef Roasting Joint were particularly popular with customers.

Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK, said: “More customers than ever before shopped with us this Christmas because they knew Aldi offered unbeatable value on premium products and the lowest prices on festive essentials.

“Although we saw strong growth across all key categories, sales of our premium Specially Selected range surpassed expectations, as customers snapped up these products for a fraction of the price they would have paid elsewhere.”
