Laings introduces board of directors to lead growth plans

Jewellery retailer Laings has appointed a nine-strong board of directors as it looks to grow its presence across the UK.

The 181-year old business said the establishment of a board will help it to build on its legacy as a destination for luxury jewellery and watches.

In setting up the board, Laings has made a series of internal promotions by appointing former heads of departments into director roles.

Meanwhile, Joe Walsh (pictured) will remain as chief executive of the business and Stuart Laing will continue as chairman. In addition, Wendy Walsh (nee Laing) and Richard Laing will remain as a director and sales director respectively.

Looking at the internal promotions, Colin McCormack has been appointed as procurement director and Sally Person as marketing director. In addition, Claire Campbell and Jill Aniola have taken on the roles of finance director and HR director respectively.

In a further move, former retail director Stuart McDowell is taking on a new role of managing director. With over 20 years’ experience in the watch and jewellery trade, Laings said he has been instrumental in navigating the business through the Covid-19  pandemic.

The sixth generation family business said it had decided to restructure the senior management team following the introduction of additional departments and its announcement regarding a £10 million retail expansion earlier this year.

Walsh said:  “As we embark on the next exciting chapter of Laings’ journey, with the relaunch of our Cardiff showroom on the horizon, it is time to adjust the way we work so that there are clear lines of responsibility, we comply fully with corporate governance but most importantly, we remain robust for the future. The appointment of a formal board is fitting for a business of our size and will support the direction of Laings as we continue to roll out our expansion plans over the next 18 months.”

In addition to the board appointments, Laings Edinburgh manager, Brian Nelson, will move into the role of head of retail. This will include responsibility for all six of Laings’ showrooms in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Southampton and Cardiff.
