John Lewis sales up 8.5% last week

The John Lewis department store increased its total sales by 8.5% year-on-year last week as customers took advantage of fashion and beauty promotions.

Fashion sales climbed by 32.1% after trade was boosted by a 20% discount across the department. Own brand fashion products were particularly popular with sales up 46% in the week. The boots category also performed well with sales  up 34% due to the week’s wet weather. In the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category, sales rose by 25.3% as the retailer price matched a competitor’s promotion.

Sales in the electrical and home technology department  increased by 3.7% due to the popularity of new products in the Android and Apple categories. Sales of cooking product were also strong, rising by 13%.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 13.8% in the week although sales of weighted blankets and duvets increased as customers bought items for  the cooler weather.

John Lewis said customers have been preparing for the festive season earlier this year and that sales loose baubles were up 20.0% last week compared to the same period last year.
