John Lewis sales up 4% in final week of clearance sale

Sales at John Lewis climbed by 4% year-on-year to £86.4 million last week as the retailer held the last week of its clearance sale.

Electrical and home technology sales were up 9.9% with sales in the communications technology category, which includes mobile phones and tablets, rising by 29%. The retailer said it was the strongest week to date in the current financial year for sales of photography equipment as customers began preparing for their summer holidays.

Home sales increased by 1.9% due to the popularity of clearance lines. Sales in the furniture and flooring category were particularly strong, ending the week up 5.8%.

Fashion sales edged up 1% with the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category achieving the strongest growth followed by menswear.
