John Lewis sales up 4.9% last week

John Lewis increased its sales by 4.9% year-on-year last week as it began introducing its spring/summer ranges.

The home category achieved the biggest percentage rise at 9.5%. This was partly due to the retailer’s clearance sale ending in other categories but continuing until the end of January in home. Offers on furniture led sales to climb 17.9% higher than in the same week last year.

Fashion sales rose by 3.5% as trade was boosted by the popularity of own brand spring/summer clothing ranges. Overall sales of womenswear were up 16.2% year-on-year.

Electrical and home technology sales grew by 2.6%. Communications technology products were up 10.8% driven by buoyant sales of audio products such as portable speakers, headphones and radios, and mobile phones. Sales of Apple phones were up 58% and while Android phone sales climbed by 76%.
