DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 4.5% last week

John Lewis saw its total sales increase by 4.5% year-on-year last week after the retailer performed well over the bank holiday and benefited from new seasonal launches.

Fashion sales climbed by 11.4% in the period with both womenswear and womenswear accessories achieving strong sales uplifts. Womenswear sales were up 21.7% as customers shopped for new clothing for the autumn, while sales of accessories rose by 10%.

Home sales increased by 2.1% driven by new season sales and the success of the retailer’s ‘Off to University’ shop.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales edged up 0.1% following good uplifts in the audio and mobile categories..

Earlier this week, the department store changed its name to John Lewis & Partners. The new branding has been unveiled on the facades of some of its London shops. The John Lewis Partnership has also changed the name of its Waitrose supermarket chain to Waitrose & Partners as it looks to emphasise its Partnership business model and culture and differentiate itself from its main competitors.
