DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales up 2.2% last week

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain rose by 2.2% last week on the same period last year.

Electricals and home technology sales increased by 11.3% driven by strong sales across beverage products and the personal care and mobile categories. Large sized TVs and sound bars also performed well.

Fashion sales were down 1.8% as the trading pattern across the department was impacted by the later fall of Mother’s Day last year. Menswear sales fared better with an uplift of 6.2%.

Home sales were down 2.4% but gift food saw a rise of 10% on the same period last year as customers bought items for Easter. There were also strong sales increases in the living and dining and lighting categories following a range of promotions.
