John Lewis sales edged up 0.7% last week

The John Lewis department store saw its sales edge up 0.7% last week against the corresponding period last year.

The uplift was driven by the retailer’s clearance sale and by customers beginning to shop from its new Spring/Summer ranges.

Fashion sales climbed by 4.9% following a strong performance in the womenswear accessories category where sales were up 19.2%. Childrenswear, nursery and haberdashery items also performed well with sales rising by 7.3%.

While home sales were down 0.5% overall in the week, the gifts, cook and dine category had a good week with sales up 8.2% on last year. In addition, furniture and flooring sales increased by 2.5%.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales declined by 1.2% although sales in the communications technology category were up 7.1% due to strong demand for Apple products.
