DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales edged up 0.6% last week

Sales at John Lewis saw a slight increase of 0.6% year-on-year last week after the retailer’s department stores benefited from the cool and wet weather in the early part of the week.

Electrical and home technology sales rose by 3.4% as the retailer continued to see strong sales of televisions which were up 38% in the week. The Dyson V10 and V11 cordless vacuum cleaners were also popular with customers.

Fashion sales were also up, rising by 0.2%, although the cooler weather had a negative impact on sales of warm weather products. In addition, menswear sales were slightly down due to the retailer annualising brand offers that it ran last year.

Meanwhile , home sales fell by 3.3% although the gift, cook and dine category performed particularly well in the early part of the week when John Lewis was running offers and price matching competitor promotions. Outdoor living sales were down against a record week last year when good weather boosted trade.
