John Lewis sales edged up 0.4% last week

John Lewis saw its sales edge up 0.4% year-on-year last week as trading continued to be influenced by the later fall of Mother’s Day and Easter this year.

Fashion had a particularly strong week with sales rising by 4.8% as warm weather clothing overtook cold weather assortments for the first time this year. Sales in the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category were up 11%, reflecting buoyant sales in beauty products ahead of Mother’s Day.

Home sales were down 1.6% as the retailer annualised against strong trading from Easter last year. The effect was felt particularly in gift food and seasonal products.

In electricals and home technology, sales were down 2% year-on-year. The best sales growth was seen in the audio and connect home and mobile categories.
