DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales down 6.1% last week

The John Lewis department store chain saw its total sales decline by 6.1% year-on-year last week.

Fashion sales fell by 7.6% as the week’s warm weather discouraged shoppers from buying new autumn lines. Sales in the beauty, wellbeing and leisure categories were down 2.4%, although beauty sales improved over the weekend due to a successful price matching initiative.

Electrical and home technology sales edged down 1.5% despite a 4.7% uplift in the communications technology category due to students buying new laptops for university.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 10.7% although sales in the retailer’s our own brand House range climbed by  10.6% as customers shopped for new season products.
