John Lewis sales down 2.3% year-on-year last week

Sales at the John Lewis & Partners department store chain dropped by 2.3% last week compared to the same period last year.

Home sales were down 6.2% overall although the retailer’s own brand ‘House’ range performed well with sales up 4.4%. John Lewis’s ‘Find, Keep, Give’ gifting range also put in a good performance by driving sales of gifts and candles up by 3.4%. In addition, christmas trees and gift foods were popular with customers.

Fashion sales rose by 4% on the same week last year. Menswear sales were up 3.1% helped by a strong sales in the men’s cashmere category where there was an uplift of 12%. While women’s accessories sales were up 4.1%, sales in the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category increased by 16.7% after the retailer price matched a competitor.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales were down 4.8% in the week although sales of accessories were up 2.5% due to strong sales within the earphones category.
