John Lewis sales down 14.4% last week after snow disrupted trade

Sales at the John Lewis department store chain were down 14.4% year-on-year last week after the snowy weather impacted sales and disrupted operations.

Electricals and home technology sales dropped by 6.3% although sales of heating products were boosted by the weather with sales surging by 265% on the same week last year.

Fashion sales fell by 18.8% but customers wanting to wrap up warm purchased hats, gloves and scarfs with sales up 38%. Sales of boots were also up, climbing by 36%.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 17.2% but customers preparing for Mother’s Day and Easter helped sales in the seasonal gift food category to rise by 36% in the week.
