DEPARTMENT STORE NEWS

John Lewis sales down 1.9% last week

The John Lewis department store chain saw its sales decrease by 1.9% year-on-year last week to £86.3 million.

Despite a good performance in the autumn/winter clothing category, fashion sales were down 1.8%.

Home sales dropped by 5.1% although the retailer’s newly opened Christmas Villages performed well. Sales of Halloween products were up 24% on the same time last year.

Meanwhile, electrical and home technology sales rose by 1.4%, driven by strong sales in communication technology. Apple products, including Macbooks and iPads, were particularly popular and there were also positive sales within the accessories category. Elsewhere, the new GoPro 6 action camera achieved a strong first week for sales.
