John Lewis sales down 0.7% last week

The John Lewis department store chain saw its sales edge down 0.7% year-on-year last week despite Valentine’s Day driving an uplift in several categories.

Fashion sales climbed by 3.3% as trade was boosted by a 16.6% uplift in the womenswear category. With Valentine’s Day falling in the week, the retailer had particularly strong sales in the jewellery, perfume and purses category.

The Charlotte Tilbury counter, which opened in the retailer’s flagship store on London’s Oxford Street in the week, also had good sales.

Electrical and home technology sales were down 1.5% but the retailer continued to see strong sales of TVs, small electrical items such as coffee machines, and vacuum cleaners.

Meanwhile, home sales were down 3.7% despite Valentine’s Day driving a sales increase in the gifts, cook and dine category.

This week a range of dresses by award-winning designer Eudon Choi is going on sale in-store and online as part of John Lewis’s own brand Modern Rarity label.
