Waitrose tightens rules on free customer coffee offer

Waitrose is introducing a stricter policy regarding its free tea and coffee offer for customers visiting its stores.

Until now myWaitrose card holders have been able to order a complimentary tea or coffee in the supermarket’s cafés by presenting their card at the till with no obligation to buy anything else.

However, the supermarket has now tightened the rules by saying that customers enjoying a free tea or coffee in the cafés will now be asked to purchase a “treat” such as a sandwich, cake, biscuit or piece of fruit.

In an email explaining the rule change, Waitrose said: “This change will enable us to continue to offer our customers the enjoyable service they expect.”

The change will not affect customers who take away a hot drink from the self-service machines while shopping in store.

The new rule will come into effect from 9 February.
