VeriFone to host Security Advisory Clinic at Retail Solutions

Archived article dated Thursday May 15th 2008

VeriFone will be hosting a drop-in Security Advisory Clinic for retailers.

Visitors to VeriFone's Security Advisory Clinic (stand number G7) will receive advice about the practical steps that can be taken to ensure retailers remain vigilant and that consumers can continue to pay with plastic with peace of mind.

Payment security experts will also be on hand to explain the latest PCI PED standards and advise how security has been strengthened as a result. There will also be the opportunity to pick up a simple step-by-step guide to help retailers implement effective security procedures as well as additional information which outlines some of the security issues in today's market and how industry leaders such as VeriFone are addressing them.

Card fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods and as recent media interest has shown, any breach of security can become high profile.

The consequences of security failure can be costly and may include a forensic incident investigation of any breach, a card association fine, government sanctions and most damaging of all, the loss of consumer confidence and an injured business reputation.

The latest PCI PED standards, introduced in January 2008, have been developed to

increase the level of security for electronic payment systems. However, to ensure these measures remain effective it is essential that card issuers, payment system manufacturers and retailers all work in harmony to provide adequate security throughout the entire financial transaction.

Retailers have a very important role to play in the fight against card crime and there are many effective security measures that a retailer can put in place to ensure that payment identity remains as secure as possible.

Debbie Mitchell, Marketing Director at VeriFone (EMEA) comments: "Payment security is only as strong as its weakest link. Retailers have an incredibly important role to play in ensuring that adequate security procedures are in place and that consumer data remains protected."
