Tesco UK sales up 1.3% over Christmas
Tesco saw its UK like-for-like sales grow by 1.3% in its six week peak Christmas period as customers “responded well” to its seasonal offering.
In the six weeks to 9 January, volumes increased by 3.5% while transactions rose by 3.4%.
Tesco said the strong performance was evident in all formats and categories, including positive like-for-like sales growth in its Tesco Extra format, where there were buoyant sales of seasonal general merchandise ranges.
However, UK like-for-like sales fell by 1.5% in the supermarket’s third quarter after it decided not to repeat three '£5 off £40' national coupon campaigns from the prior year.
International like-for-like sales increased by 4.1% in the run-up to Christmas and by 2.9% in the third quarter. Tesco said growth in both Europe and Asia was driven by improvements across its offer, particularly in food.
The results meant that group like-for-like sales rose by 2.1% in the six week Christmas period but edged down 0.5% in the third quarter.
Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: “Our Christmas performance was strong, benefiting from lower prices on an outstanding range of products. Our customer service improved materially and our colleagues went the extra mile. Put simply, we put customers at the heart of everything we did and they responded by buying more of what they needed at Tesco.
“We are continuing to focus our efforts on serving our customers a little better every day and I want to thank my colleagues across the group for their commitment, passion and energy. There is plenty more to do, but we are making good progress and are trading in line with profit expectations for the full year."
