Retailers fighting obesity better than legislation could says BRC

Wednesday June 3rd 2009

Retailers are responding to the need to help customers fight obesity more effectively than legislation could, the BRC has insisted as it publishes a catalogue of evidence from grocery sector members.

The industry is providing healthier choices and more information to create change in what consumer chose, says the document, British R

etailing: A Commitment to Health. It is third such report published over six years.

Food retailers including Asda, Boots, Burger King, The Co-Operative Group, Iceland, Marks & Spencer, McDonald's, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose have taken part in creating the report.

Minister for Health Dawn Primarolo says, “Action by the BRC's members to help customers to help customers make healthier choices has been fantastic, and I hope they continue to lead the way. Companies putting calories content on their menus, promoting fruit and veg and taking steps to cut the amount of salt, fat and sugar in their own brand products is encouraging.”

“Achieving healthier diets is about more than targets, labelling rules or promotion bans,” says BRC director general Stephen Robertson. “This catalogue of evidence shows businesses, responding to customer demand and competing on their health credentials, bringing healthy eating initiatives to shoppers more effectively than the law ever could.”
