New street wardens combat crime
August 9 2002
A new street patrol is on duty in London's leading shopping streets.
The Red Cap wardens are patrolling Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street. The initiative has been devised by the New West End Company, working in partnership with the Metropolitan Police. The 25 fully trained Red Caps, named after their distinctive uniform, will contribute to the safety and professional ambience of the West End. Their role is to identify potential crime, deter anti-social behaviour, monitor the appearance of the street environment and act as ambassadors for the area, enhancing the visitor experience by providing local information and assistance to shoppers and visitors. Trained by Chubb with a contribution from the Metropolitan police, the Red Caps have all attended a one-month course reflecting the partnership between the New West End Company, Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police. The training has covered security, the law and their role, suspect detainment, evidence collection, people management, evacuation, first aid and comprehensive local knowledge such as transport, shops, amenities and street orientation.
The Red Caps will liase regularly with local police officers, retailers, and the New West End Company*#*8217;s recently launched Clean Team cleaning patrol to ensure that the streets are a pleasant place to be.
Helen Robinson, Chief Executive of the New West End Company said: "The Red Caps will be a strong visual presence in the street to reassure people and act as real local experts. They are the next step in our vision to revitalise the West End."
Mike Perry of Chubb Security Personnel said: "Chubb has been providing security personnel services to the public sector for over 30 years, in a wide range of roles. The West End Company*#*8217;s exciting new initiative makes full use of our expertise."
The initiative is part of the New West End Company*#*8217;s plan to help revitalise the West End of London, modelled on the successful rejuvenation of Times Square in New York.
