Poundland to support Macmillan in charity push

Single price retailer Poundland has chosen Macmillan Cancer Support as its charity of the year.

The company will involve staff from its 211 stores and its West Midlands head office in generating donations for Macmillan throughout the year. A target of £100,000 in donations has been set.

In-store and corporate events will be used to drive awareness of the charity. An official fundraising launch will take place this week at the Poundland head office, and on Saturday in stores. Staff will make donations to wear football shorts for the day in a 'Strip for Macmillan' event. Coffee mornings, back to school parties and sponsored runs are planned for later in the year.

“We are delighted to have Macmillan Cancer Support as our charity of the year. With statistics of one in three people being diagnosed with cancer, we feel this is a great opportunity for Poundland to raise awareness and donations for this important charity. The work that Macmillan carries out helps not only people living with cancer but also their family and carers and we are confident Poundland staff and shoppers will give generously,” says Poundland chief executive Jim McCarthy.

Support from high street partners like Poundland not only helps to raise essential funds for our cancer support services but also to raise awareness of the breadth of support we provide,” says Macmillan Cancer Support head of corporate partnerships Charles Byrne. “Every penny donated by Poundland staff or customers will help to provide essential information, expert medical care, emotional support and financial help in local communities.”

Poundland customers can donate to Macmillan Cancer Support in all stores or online.
