Nokia secures its next flagship store in Sao Paulo

Nokia has acquired its ninth store in its Flagship Store Programme in South America's largest city -Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The 300 sq m store is located on Rue Oscar Freire 849, in the exclusive Jardins district and is due to open in Spring 2008. It will sit alongside a mix of trendy Brazilian fashion brands and international operators such as Tommy Hilfiger, Reebok, Cartier, Armani, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. Cushman & Wakefield's São Paulo office acted on behalf of Nokia.
Nokia plans to open a total of 18 Flagship Stores globally, targeting the very best retail locations in the world's leading retail cities.Nokia kick-started its Flagship Store Programme with its first opening on Tverskaya Street in Moscow in December 2005. Since then the retailer has opened on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago, in Causeway Bay in Hong Kong, on Aleksanterinkatu in its home town of Helsinki, on east 57th Street in New York at the corner of 5th Avenue and in the new Antara Polanco scheme in Mexico City.
The next to open is on Nanjing Road East, the main street in Shanghai in October, then London's Regent Street, in the former Dickens and Jones store, followed by Sao Paulo.
Andrew Bathurst, director of Harper Dennis Hobbs and Nokia's in house retail real estate consultant, comments: “To a large extent we have covered our flagship acquisition in The Americas and are focusing next on Europe, in cities such as Paris, Madrid or Barcelona, Milan, Istanbul and Munich.”
“We are also very keen to open in further cities in Asia, targeting Mumbai, Singapore, Dubai and Tokyo.”
Nokia's Flagship Store Programme is targeting major shopping destinations in buildings that stand out from the crowd. The stores' design has been widely acclaimed, most recently winning an international award for Most Innovative Retail Concept of the Year.
Nokia's retail development director Jeremy Wright says: “As well as creating innovative features for our customers and the highest quality interiors, the facade of the building is extremely important, to mark the store as truly flagship.”
Andrew Bathurst adds: “The buildings must be the best of the best in appearance and located in the prime shopping areas. Size wise, stores already acquired range from 150 sq m in Helsinki to, the largest, 1,000 sq m in London. Ideally we are looking at around 400 sq m, but we are flexible provided the building has great visual impact.”
