Middleton Shopping Centre shows its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint
Middleton Shopping Centre has announced that it has reduced the amount of waste that it sends to landfill by 50% since 2007
Prior to 2007, Middleton Shopping Centre was sending approximately 46.5 tonnes of waste per month to landfill but now it only sends 19.5 tonnes and is still continuing to reduce this. Not only is the centre minimising waste but it is also helping to reduce its carbon footprint by decreasing the number of heavy duty trucks on the road that are used to deliver waste to landfill. Middleton Shopping Centre now saves 23 return journeys per month of trucks that used to travel 13 miles each way.Howard Gibbons, Centre Manager at Middleton Shopping Centre comments: “We are all strongly committed to our recycling program and we encourage all of our tenants to join us in reducing our carbon footprint. We now recycle all polythene, plastic coat hangers and electrical appliances as well as cardboard, wood and glass, which has helped us to greatly reduce our waste to landfill and we strive to do even more.”
Through its recycling program, the centre has so far saved 46.75 tonnes of cardboard, 384kg of polythene and 595kg of plastic coat hangers. Recycling these materials helps to protect the environment as it conserves natural resources and saves energy, which ultimately reduces greenhouse gases. The centre also uses energy saving light bulbs and plans to introduce recycling bins for customers in the near future.
