John Lewis sees surge in sales of Glasgow 2014 official merchandise

With the XX Commonwealth Games kicking off in Glasgow today, John Lewis has revealed that sales of Glasgow 2014 official merchandise at John Lewis are up 55% on this time last week.

The retailer said stand-out products include the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Classic Logo Cap, sales of which have surged 189% week-on-week. Running equipment is another strong performer with sales of Nike Epic Printed cropped running tights up 150% and Nike Air Zoom Pegasus+31 Women’s running shoes also up 150%.

Other products boosted by the Commonwealth Games include the Speedo Monogram Allover Muscleback swimsuit, up 119% week-on-week, and the Yonex Muscle Power 2 junior badminton racquet, up 100%.

Some customers are also showing a preference for keeping fit in the comfort of their own homes as the retailer has seen sales of the Nordic Track T23 treadmill rise by 200% on last week.

Maggie Porteous, director of selling, John Lewis said: “Customers have been showing us that they are looking forward to celebrating Glasgow 2014 with impressive sales of official merchandise +55% on last week .

“At John Lewis we’re equally excited with this week seeing the launch of Tea on the Green in Glasgow’s Royal Exchange Square our pop-up tea house. During the Games visitors will be able to enjoy a sumptuous complimentary afternoon tea whilst catching all the excitement on the big screen.”
